Jerusalem Day is an Israeli national holiday commemorating the reunification of Jerusalem, which was divided in 1948 during the War of Independence and 19 years later was reunited, after the Six Day War.
The battle of Jerusalem began on the morning of June 5, 1967 when the Jordanians opened fire along the cease-fire line and managed to capture some parts of Jerusalem which were under Israeli sovereignty.
By the morning of June 6, Israel moved the "Har'el" brigade to storm the northern neighborhoods of Jerusalem, which were then under Jordan. In addition, a paratroop brigade was instructed to open the way to Mount Scopus and the Rockefeller Museum in order to position themselves to break through to the "Old City" of Jerusalem on a short notice.

On June 7th the Israeli General Staff issued the order to liberate the "Old City". The Central Command activated the paratroop brigade that had conquered the Mount of Olives and the Mount Scopus ridge. These troops broke into the "Old City" through the "Lions' Gate" and hoisted the Israeli flag over the "Western Wall".

Following the unification of the city in 1967, the Chief Rabbinate of Israel declared Jerusalem Day a minor religious holiday. The day is marked in Israel by state ceremonies, memorial services for fallen soldiers and parades.
