October 17, 1244: The Battle of Harbiyah.
On this day the Crusaders led allied armies of Christians and Ayyubid Muslims from Damascus into a battle against the Egyptian Ayyubid Sultanate.
This battle took place northeast of Gaza and turned to be the Crusaders worst defeat since the Battle of Hattin, 57 years earlier.
While the Battle of Hattin holds great symbolic importance due to the fall of Jerusalem into the hands of Saladin, the battle of Harbiyah marks the collapse of Christian power in the Holy Land.
