First Israeli census
November 8, 1948: Israel holds its first census amidst the Israeli War of Independence.
The census was conducted in order to establish a Population Register and to prepare a basis for distributing ID cards for the first upcoming elections. The total population of the 7 months young state was under 900,000.
In March 2013 the Israeli Central Bureau of Statistics published that Israel's current population stands at 8,012,000.
