The foundations of the Bahá'í faith were laid by Bahá'u'lláh in Iran, during the 19th century. He and his family wandered throughout the Middle East and finally settled down in the Holy Land, after being deported by the Ottoman Empire.

With 7 million followers worldwide, the religion center of the Bahá'í faith is located in Haifa and Acre, Israel.

In 2008 UNESCO declared the Bahá'í sites in Haifa and Acre along with 26 other Bahá'í buildings in northern Israel, a World Heritage Site.

The Bahá'í shrine in Haifa is surrounded by a magnificent garden which consists of nineteen terraces extending all the way up the northern slope of Mount Carmel.
The gardens in Haifa and Acre are visited annually by half a million visitors, making them together one of the most popular touring sites in the Middle East.
