| Lord Balfour |
On November 2, 1917, United Kingdom's Foreign Secretary Arthur James Balfour issued what became known as the "Balfour Declaration".During WWI, British policy became committed to the idea of establishing a Jewish home in the Holy Land. After discussions in the British Cabinet and consultation with Zionist leaders, the decision was made known in the form of a letter by U.K. Foreign Secretary Lord Balfour to Lord Rothschild, which was a leader of the British Jewish community. This statement was intended to be transmitted to the Zionist Federation of Great Britain and Ireland.
The letter represents the first political recognition of Zionist aims by a Great Power.
