Emperor Vespasian - the Destroyer of Judea
In February 67 Titus Flavius Vespasianus (Vespasian) and his son Titus were called into Judea, after the rebelling Jews defeated the Roman governor Cestius Gallus and banished the Roman legions out of the country.
In a series of successful campaigns Vespasian managed to capture almost all of Judea by June 68 , except for Jerusalem and a few forts, Masada and Herodion among them. A year later, following a turmoil which led to the Year of the Four Emperors (the year when four emperors ruled in a remarkable succession), Senate declared him the Emperor of Rome.
In 70 AD while Vespasian was sitting on the imperial throne, his son Titus completed the capture and destruction of Jerusalem.
Vespasian was born in November 17, 9 AD.
He died in June 23, 79 AD.
