April 3, 33 AD: The Estimated Date of the Crucifixion of Jesus
"And when Jesus had cried out again in a loud voice, he gave up his spirit. At that moment the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth shook, the rocks split and the tombs broke open." This verse from the Gospel of Matthew, Chapter 27, mentions an earthquake that occurred around the time of the crucifixion. Recent geological studies which focused on earthquake activity in the Dead Sea area (approx. 13 miles from Jerusalem), found that a major seismic event occurred sometime between 26 AD and 36 AD.
The Bible indicates that Jesus was crucified on a Friday near the Jewish holiday of Passover, during the reign of Pontius Pilate (26 – 36 AD). By cross-referencing the historical facts with the Hebrew calendar researchers concluded that the most likely date of Jesus' crucifixion was Friday April 3, 33 AD.
