German Nazi SS Lieutenant Colonel Otto Adolf Eichmann (born 19 March 1906), was one of the major organisers of the Holocaust. He was Chief of the Jewish Office of the Gestapo and in that roll he was in charge over managing the logistics of mass deportation of Jews to ghettos and extermination camps in German-occupied Eastern Europe during World War II.

After the war, Eichmann fled from Austria to Argentina where he lived under the name Ricardo Klement.

In May 1960, he was captured in Argentina by the Mossad, Israel's intelligence service. Following a widely publicised trial in Israel, he was found guilty of war crimes and hanged in 1962.

His trial, which aroused enormous international interest and some controversy, began on April 11, 1961 in Jerusalem. On December 11, 1961, Eichmann was indicted on 15 criminal charges, including crimes against humanity, crimes against the Jewish people and membership in an outlawed organization. On December 15, he was sentenced to death.

Eichmann was executed by hanging a few minutes before midnight on May 31, 1962. His body was cremated and the ashes were spread at sea, beyond Israel's territorial waters. Eichmann's execution remains the only death sentence ever to be executed in Israel.
